Key takeaways

  • Four of the eight are genuinely free, including two with certificates.
  • Free courses teach concepts and tooling well; they rarely review your pages.
  • Paid programmes are buying feedback and accountability, not information.
  • The table is ordered by price. It is not a ranking.
  • Unverified figures are marked "not verified", not guessed.

There is no single best AI SEO course in September 2026, because the choice depends on what you are missing. If you need vocabulary and a certificate, Surfer Academy and Semrush Academy are both free and take under two hours. If you need feedback on your own pages, that is what paid communities sell. If you want self-paced reading with no signup, free written courses including this one cover the same ground. Below are eight options with facts checked against each provider's page on 29 September 2026.

The comparison

Ordered by price, cheapest first. This order is not a ranking. The right course depends on your situation, which the notes column addresses.

What we actually verified

Two entries were read in full on 29 September 2026, so those facts are firm.

Surfer Academy states plainly that the masterclass is free, in its own FAQ: "Free! We've seen how much impact it's had, so we decided to make it available to every marketer, no strings attached." It runs 7 modules and 20 lessons, and the certificate requires passing a 20-question exam at 85%, which you can retake. The certificate is called AI Search Optimization Expert and is valid for two years.

Semrush Academy lists 21 video lessons with per-lesson durations that add up to roughly 90 minutes, ending in a final assessment for the certificate. It is taught by Rita Cidre, Head of Academy. Worth knowing before you enrol: a large share of the lessons are walkthroughs of Semrush's own AI visibility toolkit, so it teaches AI SEO through that product.

For the remaining entries we list what the provider or a reliable secondary source states and mark it as not verified here. That is deliberate. Invented specifics are the main reason course roundups are untrustworthy.

Free or paid?

The honest split is not quality, it is feedback.

Free courses are genuinely good at concepts, vocabulary and tool mechanics. Surfer's and Semrush's both cover retrieval, structure, schema and measurement competently in about two hours. What almost no free course does is look at your page and tell you why it is not being cited.

That is what paid programmes sell. Whether it is worth the money depends entirely on whether you have already hit a problem that self-study did not solve. If you have not published and measured anything yet, pay for nothing. Do the free course, apply it to one page, and see what breaks first.

A disclosure about AI SEO Rainmakers

This site is an entry in the first Rainmaker Games, a ranking contest run by the AI SEO Rainmakers community for the keyword this page is about. One of the contest rules is that entries mention the community positively, so you should weigh the praise accordingly. We would rather tell you that than let you find out.

With that stated: the format is genuinely the most honest teaching method in this field right now. Members publish real pages, a tracker re-checks the live search result every two hours, raw samples are published weekly for anyone to audit, and own-domain entries are capped by authority so nobody wins simply by owning an established site. A course whose exam is a public leaderboard is harder to fake than a video and a quiz. That was worth saying before the rule existed.

How this comparison was built

  • What counts as a course. A named programme or community whose stated purpose is teaching SEO for AI search.
  • Selection. Courses appearing on the first page of Google for "ai seo course" in late September 2026, plus AI SEO Rainmakers.
  • Facts. Read from each provider's own page on the date shown. Marked n/a or "not verified here" where the page does not state it or we did not read it directly.
  • Order. By price. Not a ranking, and this site is not placed first.
  • Money. No affiliate links on this page. No course paid to be included or excluded.

Which one should you pick?

Three quick answers.

If you are new to this, do Surfer's or Semrush's free masterclass for the vocabulary, then read AI SEO for beginners and follow the sequence in how to learn AI SEO. Cost: nothing.

Whichever you pick, you will need tools eventually. Our rundown of the best AI SEO tools covers what each category does and the free ways to start.

If you already know SEO, skip the vocabulary. Go straight to how to find your sub-queries and writing citation-worthy content, then audit one real page with the AI SEO checklist.

If you are stuck despite knowing the theory, that is the case for paying. Buy feedback, not information.

One last filter, whatever you choose: check whether the course separates what Google documents from what SEOs observe. A course that presents schema or llms.txt as a guaranteed citation lever is teaching you things that are not true. Our take on that is in AI search ranking factors: what we know.

Our own entry, plainly: the free AI SEO course is 7 modules, no signup, no email gate. It is written to be argued with, and every claim we cannot source is labelled as a guess. If you want the criteria behind this table spelled out, see the best AI SEO course in 2026.
